Notion Mail Shutdown: What to Do Before Sept 22

Email inbox dissolving into light particles that reform into a glowing AI robot, representing Notion Mail shutting down in favor of AI agents

Notion is shutting down Notion Mail, its email inbox app, on September 22, 2026. The company isn’t replacing it with a better inbox. It’s replacing it with agents. Notion has said more than half of Notion Mail users already manage email without ever opening the inbox at all, letting AI agents handle it instead.

What’s New

  • Notion Mail shuts down completely on September 22, 2026. After that date, anything you haven’t saved gets permanently deleted
  • Your actual email history is safe either way. Notion Mail always synced two ways with Gmail, so every email you sent or received stays exactly where it is in Gmail
  • A few things only exist inside Notion Mail and won’t carry over automatically: drafts, scheduled emails, snippets, auto-label instructions, and any files attached to snippets. You need to export these yourself before September 21
  • Custom inbox views, sorting setups, and email reminders you built in Notion Mail won’t transfer to Gmail at all
  • If you’re on a HIPAA-regulated plan, Notion wants you to move off Notion Mail by June 30, much earlier than the general shutdown
  • Everything that already runs through Notion’s AI agents and Gmail or Outlook connections keeps working. Mail blocks already added to Notion pages stay intact too
  • This affects every Notion plan. The app is going away for everyone, not just one tier

Why It Matters

This isn’t a company quietly killing an underperforming feature. Notion is openly saying the opposite happened, the feature worked well enough that people stopped using it the normal way. Once you’re letting an agent read, sort, and draft your email for you, the inbox itself turns into something you only check to double-check the agent’s work, not something you live in.

That’s a real shift in what “email software” even means. The competitive fight isn’t really about who builds the best inbox interface anymore. It’s about who builds the agent good enough that you stop opening the inbox in the first place. Notion built both, watched usage move almost entirely toward the agent side, and just shut down the part nobody was using.

Should You Care?

If you use Notion Mail, yes, directly. Export your drafts, scheduled emails, snippets, and any snippet attachments before September 21. Your actual email history isn’t at risk since it already lives in Gmail, but anything specific to the Notion Mail app itself disappears for good after the shutdown.

If you don’t use Notion Mail, this is still worth noticing as a signal. A real, shipped product getting shut down specifically because an AI agent made the manual version unnecessary is a different kind of story than another company just announcing a new agent feature. It’s a sign agents are starting to actually replace the tools they were originally just assisting.
